Interview with Director Guan Fang

Q. Hello Guan, it’s a big pleasure to have you with us for this interview.
Congratulations on your ‘Best Experimental’ award at last February’s edition of the “Rome International Movie Awards” (click HERE). Your new project is “Blue Delusion”: in a few words, what is it about?

A. Novalis conveys a longing for the meaning of life that grows out of the mystical experience and triumphs over death in his unfinished novel, "Heinrich von Offterdingen". Longing is blue. It is connected with distance, far-away, like loyalty. The mysterious and romantic blue also depicts the hallucinatory and lost Neptune, symbolizing far-fetched ideals, as Plato described in The Republic... Simply put, we intend to mirror the "delusions" about people. The leading actor suffers from an inner entanglement with himself for his incredible thing done. Of course, this is not necessarily something that has already happened.

Q. What can you tell us about the shoot as such, and the on-set atmosphere? Was it difficult to find the right collaborators and, above all, a cast who could translate your cinematographic vision into acting and images?
A. Everyone in the team was so concentrated, from the set to the lighting adjustment, finding the best camera location and on-site rehearsal, that many times we forgot about the time and we even felt no toilsome, as we worked together to solve problems. It is definitely not an easy task to find the right collaborators. So we first require everyone in the leading team to be devoted and passionate for dance and film. Second, we expected unique temperaments in their respective fields. They must be very responsible, kind, meticulous and team-minded. Because we believe that nothing short of these characteristics gives birth to more surprises. That explains why we are very cautious in finding partners.

Q. What got you into filmmaking in the first place, and did you receive any formal training on the subject?
A.We are sure good at dance, but when it comes to film-making, we are indeed newcomers to this field. We are always attracted whenever we see excellent short films, no matter the dramatic acts, performance or the visual quality of the film, we are obsessed with these works. So we have always had a wish to make a film about dance, thereby combining dance and film expression to tell the story with our body......
In terms of professional study, we received no formal training. That did lead us to certain difficulties in learning and mastering the application of technology, such as the on-site design and operation of photographic and lighting equipment. So we spent most of our spare time watching videos, tutorials, engaging in hands-on and experiment…

Q. What can you tell us about your filmwork prior to “Bizzarro e Fantastico”?
A. We had been working on stage productions prior to "Blue Delusion". This is our first dance film.

Q. Any future projects you’d like to share?
A.We are preparing for the next work, a about 1-hour stage work, in which we focus on exploring the content that we have been concerned about for a long time, we hope this is a very creative start, and also prepare for the next dance film at the same time. We keep on experimenting this dance film, integrating more splendid audio-visual elements, and we are looking forward to the final work and overcoming the accompanying challenges.

Q. How would you describe yourself as a director?
A. I would consider myself one of  the delusional people who think about 90% of the things that are beyond the reach and difficult to accomplish by ourselves at the moment. I guess that is me.

Q. Directors (and indeed actors) who inspire you?
A. James Cameron, our favorite film director, has inspired us and gifted us a dream of film-making movie with his masterpieces in the early days.

Q. Your favourite movies? And of course, films you really deplore?
A. One of my favorite movies lately is "The Invisible Guest" that is filled with incredible reversals. The surprising plot is indeed an expression worth learning for us. It must be very exciting if we can act it out through dance movements.
My least favorite films are those failing to reflect the director's attitude and just serve the hour, which is the last thing we want to see..

Q. Where can people see your work?

A. Our current works are yet to be released on any online platform, but if there is any news about the works, we will publish them on our Instragram (HERE).

Q. Thank you for this very inspiring interview, Sam. Here at the “Rome International Movie Awards” we look forward to seeing and appreciating your new film productions!
A. First, we are very grateful for this great film festival, it brought us a very memorable experience. We are very honored to be part of this lasting memory. My friends and I will always remember this for the great inspiration. We will continue to engage in creation with such inspiration and hope to present better works to this great festival, thank you very much.
